Michelle Boyd Waters on What the Hack

The worst part about getting my Facebook account hacked was losing my personal and professional connections with people from around the world and across the decades after a social media compromise by hackers resulted in my account ultimately being deleted.

I could have quietly let the hackers get away with stealing my account (and $300), but I decided to fight back. I wrote the an article about how to protect your business from social media hackers, and I shared my story with a local news organization.

These efforts to spread the word has also provided me with the opportunity to be a guest on the What the Hack? Podcast hosted by Adam Levin, former Director of Consumer Affairs for the State of New Jersey, serial entrepreneur and author of Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World Full of Scammers, Phishers, and Identity Thieves, Beau “Hack Me” Friedlander, and Travis “Here's What Actually Happened” Taylor.

You can read more about my story and listen to this fun podcast episode here:

What does this mean for you as an entrepreneur?

  • Think about the problems you have faced (or are facing) and what lessons you can learn from it. Then think about how those lessons can benefit your customers.
  • Make sure your social media accounts are sending your readers and customers to a site that you own, control, and are backing up frequently.
  • Share your story on your website and in your email list so that others can benefit from your experience -- and see you as a trusted authority in your market.

Listen to the episode linked above to learn more about what happened to me, how I handled it, and what Adam and Travis think are the important lessons.

About the Author

I chose to proactively retire from the classroom teaching and share my gifts in a different context. I'm a damn good teacher and I'm tired of working within a frustrating system that won't let me do what I know is right. So I'm taking my business full time -- and I'm still educating, still making a difference in the world. And I want to help you do the same.
