Zia Hassan

Do you know what's holding you back from finally making that jump out of the classroom? Are you plagued with the idea that "the only thing I've done is teach?"

Trust me... you are NOT alone! I've had my fair share of careers outside of the classroom and so has my guest today.

Zia Hassan is a career coach who helps teachers pivot into other industries. He got his start working as an IT consultant at IBM. After ignoring the desire for a career change for 6 years, he became an elementary school teacher, a Microsoft trainer, an adjunct professor at a community college, and now a life coach/teacher career coach.

As you can see, even though he's no longer in the classroom, he's still putting his love of teaching to work in other areas.

Gone are the days of staying in one career for 40 years until you retire!

In this interview we discuss the two fundamental things that get in people's way when it comes to making this big decision. Zia also gives us some prompts to discover our 'core values' which will help you align your goals with your next steps.

We also give names to those negative voices in our heads (aka saboteurs) that are so good at convincing us to stay in our comfort zones.

Sound Advice for Transitioning Out of the Classroom...

  • Take baby steps.
  • Explore your core values.
  • Meet others who have the job/career/business you want. Discuss openly what's necessary to succeed.
  • If you truly love teaching, brainstorm ways your teaching skills can translate into different areas.
  • Understand that everyone's path is different. There is no one single formula or roadmap to follow.

About the Author

I chose to proactively retire from the classroom teaching and share my gifts in a different context. I'm a damn good teacher and I'm tired of working within a frustrating system that won't let me do what I know is right. So I'm taking my business full time -- and I'm still educating, still making a difference in the world. And I want to help you do the same.

  • Love this episode, Michelle! I’m not a teacher BUT so many of the questions and topics you discussed can apply to ANYONE in ANY field who is considering making a career change. Thinking about core values and talking to others who have your “ideal” job/career/business are so important because we don’t know what we don’t know. Usually our views of another job or industry are very idealistic simply because we’re not in that space everyday. I figure it never hurts to think of these things even if you’re totally happy with what you’re doing, just for the validation that you’re on the right track.
